Dr Deepak A S FMPS

Message from the Dean

The expansion of the Indian economy has, over the years, buoyed the demand for well-qualified science graduates. As the country grows, so too does its requirement for scientists, industry professionals, administrators, teachers, and professors. The Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (FMPS) at the Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences is perfectly poised to meet this demand.

FMPS has three departments — the Department of Physics, the Department of Chemistry, and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and academic research programmes that are designed to be outcome-based and industry-focussed.

The Faculty’s undergraduate programmes lead to a B.Sc (Hons) with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Sciences, and Electronics as optional subjects. The postgraduate programmes lead to an M.Sc in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, while the academic research programmes lead to a Ph.D in the same subjects.

FMPS’s curriculum has been carefully created by experienced faculty members in consultation with various national and international universities, research institutes, and organisations. It complements theoretical learning with practical application and ensures industry exposure.

Students are encouraged to pursue internships with organisations involved in research and development. They are also expected to execute a well-defined project in a team in order to cultivate and enhance essential skills like critical thinking and problem solving. Additionally, students are required to submit a project report as partial fulfillment for the award of the degree.

The programmes are also designed to train students in interdisciplinary thinking and effective communication skills. This contributes to students’ employability and guarantees a smooth transition from academia to work.

Features such as undergoing majors, opting for internships, and executing a full-fledged academic project during the programme open up several opportunities for students. These include registering for further studies in a subject area of their choice, especially if they wish to pursue academia or research. These features — along with advanced teaching and learning resources, and the strong connection of faculty members to industry and research — give FMPS’s programmes a competitive edge over others.

My best wishes to our incoming graduates. We are eager and proud to help you in your academic and professional journeys.
